Before you start to wonder, "Who is this person and what the hell does she know about Horror movies?" Let me explain a few things about this page to you.
I am not a professional writer (obviously). I don't care if you think I should describe what the movie is about and give juicy details about the movie. I think people should be somewhat surprised when they go see a movie. So, I am only writing what I like and dislike about movies... without giving too much away. I know ALOT about the horror genre, more than some give me credit for. Again, when I write a review, I am only stating my likes and dislikes. Not the entire storyline.
So, with all that aside....enjoy the reviews!
I recently rented "Wishmaster 2". I thought the first movie was good. It was kinda cool watching Candyman (Tony Todd), Jason (Kane Hodder), and Freddy (Robert Englund) portray the victims instead of the stalkers. It was fun spotting all the other horror genre actor cameos as well. The idea was original and alot of important people were involved in the making of the movie. I was excited when it came out. The ending was good. I thought that was the end of Djinn. I was wrong!
Well, for some reason they brought Djinn back. I think they should have left him alone. First off, the acting was really bad (No offense to Andrew Divoff)! The f/x could have been better. The only memorable scenes were of a woman shitting gold coins and a man who was turned inside out. I fell asleep right at the ending. That is how intense it was. I have to give "Wishmaster 2" the cold shoulder. It should have ended in part 1.
"The Ugly" has been out a while, but the cover art on the box kept scaring me away. Since there was nothing else to rent that day, I decided I would give "The Ugly" a try. It was ok. The story was original and had cool visuals now and then, but overall I was a little disappointed. The acting was bad and I found the characters to be somewhat annoying at times. The ghosts kept my interest through out the movie. I don't want to give away too much info to those of you who haven't seen it yet. The ending was good though. I give "The Ugly" a slight nudge for cool visuals.
I recently bought "Psycho". I'm not sure what compelled me to do such a thing either. Before you get your panties in a wad, I'm talking about the 1999 remake. I could never diss Mr.
Hitchcock!! I must say that the remade version
was pretty good. I thought Anne Heche played Janet Leigh quite well. The shower scene was a bit bloodier this time around. That alone is a plus in my book! I just couldn't get past the images of her and Ellen DeGeneres muff diving. *shrugs* Vince Vaughn did do a good job portraying Norman Bates. But, no one can ever do Norman like Anthony Perkins did. I never knew Norman was masterbating when he was watching Janet through the little hole in the wall! For a remake, it was good. I have to give "Psycho" a
pat on the back for keeping to the original movie so well and for choosing good actors to play the
classic characters!
As soon as "The Mummy" was released, I went out and bought a copy. I wasn't able to see it when it was in the theatre, which now I am upset that I did. I actually like this remake! I was thinking, "Oh Gawd!! Encino man turned Action hero??!!" He reminded me of Ash in a strange sort of way. The F/X were impressive. My favorite was the opening scene of the camera panning over the city in Egypt. I have been fascinated with Egyptian mythology and ancient Egyptian architecture for years. What about the gore, you say? Eh, the gore factor in this was kinda low. The story was good enough and the visuals kept me enthralled throught the entire movie. I wanted to kick Benny, (Kevin J. O'Connor- Lord of Illusions) in the ass though. He was quite a putz!! Over all, I have to give "The Mummy" a one-handed, heavy metal sign for great visuals, good story, an Ash-like Brendan Fraser, and subject matter I am interested in. Here is a little trivia. Did you know that "The Mummy" was given to Clive Barker to direct. His interpretation of the story was more sexually orientated (naturally..lol) and was turned down by the production company because they didn't want to put out that type of 'Mummy' movie at that time. It wasn't like any other mummy movie previously released. The movie was also given to George Romero (Night of the Living Dead- for those of you who don't know who he is) as well. Clive's adaptation would have kicked ass in my opinion.
"The Thirteenth Floor" came out on video this past Tuesday (Oct. 5). I thought it was... ok. The acting was really bland, except for Vincent D'Onofrio. He always delivers a good performance and plays a good psychopath! Gretchen Mol irritates me for some reason. I think it's her face. I'm still trying to figure her out. The story needed more likeable characters and definitely needed more action sequences. It was kind of original, I'll give it that much. The ads made it look like something it was not. I was expecting something different. I have to give "The Thirteenth Floor" a slight frown for bland acting, ugly colors, and a not-so exciting story.
I have been waiting anxiously to see "Ravenous" ever since I read about in 'Fangoria'. It was well worth the wait!!! Holy gorefest!! The concept was somewhat original. I like the actors they chose for the movie as well. Jeffrey Jones has been in some of my favorite movies and can play a good psychopath. He wasn't really in this movie though. I was surprised at all the gore!!! Usually studio movies hold back on the blood, but damn...not this one! The music gave it a 'back-woods, imbred, creepy' feeling. I was a little disappointed with the writers poor character development of the main character (Guy Pearce) and his hunger for flesh. You can see that he has a morality issue he is dealing with since he took his first bite (or drink). I think they should have gone into that a little more. Overall this was a really good movie. I have to give "Ravenous" a high heavy metal sign for creepy music, good actors, and lots of gore!!!
Coming soon: Candyman3. Now this one is not going to be a fun movie to review. I am already disappointed. The first one ruled. Farewell to the Flesh was ok. But why Part 3? 'Shrugs' Maybe Tony Todd had a good idea when he decided there should be another Candyman movie. We'll see!
I'm still waiting for Candyman to make it to the
viddy store here...
Still waiting........
Maybe the reason I have been waiting so long is because it doesn't come out on video unil November (16th, I believe)....Ughhh. Yes, I do feel stupid, Thank you.
